Chapel Two - Visitation
The Visitation to Saint Elizabeth in the Second Chapel of the Sacro Monte di Varese: a meeting of two mothers.
The Second Chapel of the Sacro Monte di Varese is dedicated to the Visitation. Built in 1605, from designs by Giuseppe Bernascone, the chapel has a rectangular layout and it is positioned parallel to the Via Sacra, which is why visitors first see the right side of the building and its sundial.
Three windows offer a glimpse into the inside, with its terracotta figures by Francesco Silva, the artist of most of the sculptures present in the fourteen chapels.
Inside, the scene of the Visitation shows Elizabeth, followed by her elderly husband, Zechariah, as they come forward to welcome Mary, accompanied by Joseph.
The frescos by Giovan Paolo Ghianda, date back to 1624, and show a landscape that extends past the painted architecture.
